Chess

White's turn

White0
Black0

The basic moves work the way you'd expect — this covers just the special ones, since those are the easiest to forget.

  • Castling: your king and a rook can swap into position in one move — the king slides 2 squares toward the rook, and the rook hops to the other side of it. Only works if neither piece has moved yet, nothing's in between them, and the king isn't in check, doesn't pass through check, or land in check.
  • En passant: if an opponent's pawn slides 2 squares on its first move and lands right beside one of yours, you can capture it as though it had only moved 1 square — but only on your very next move, or the chance is gone.
  • Promotion: get a pawn all the way to the far row and it automatically becomes a Queen — no choice offered, but Queen is almost always what you'd want anyway.
